Chances are the ship was a steamer working the Great Lakes trade.Trying to find any reference to a ship called The Belle Isle sailing in the 1800's?"On receipt of the news of Thurot鈥檚 ships being brought into Ramsey Bay, I went there to see the ships. On getting on board the Mctr茅chal Belleisle, I was struck with astonishment.

鈥楾urn which way I would, nothing but scattered limbs and dead or dying men met my view. Below is what I found using that spelling.

* The first "Belleisle" was a re-named French 74-gun third-rate ship of the line originally named Formidable captured in 1795 near Belle 脦le. She fought at the Battle of Trafalgar and was broken up in 1814.

* The second "Belleisle" was a 74-gun third rate launched in 1819 and broken up in 1872.

* The third "Belleisle" was the lead ship of her class of ironclad battleship, originally built for the Ottoman Empire as "Peiki Shereef", but purchased in 1876, used as a coast defense ship and expended as a target ship in 1903.

* A destroyer named "Belleisle" was planned to be launched in 1946 but never completed.Trying to find any reference to a ship called The Belle Isle sailing in the 1800's?
The Belle Isle sailing in the 1800s - from the following website link - it seems the Belle Isle was a tea clipper [similar to Cutty Sark] of the 1850s.

The New Zealand Maritime Record - NZNMM1857 Belle Isle A remarkable feature of the remains of the Bristol built Tea ... on Quail Island, nothing is yet known about this wooden sailing vessel. ...
